[Book Review] Beautiful Things Obey
Here's the thing nobody tells you about a book written by three authors: it usually reads like three authors. You feel the seams. You clock the chapter where the voice changes and someone new grabbed the wheel.
I went in braced for exactly that.
I could not find a single seam. Not one.
Read that again. Three USA Today-level names: T.L. Smith, Penny Dee, Kia Carrington-Russell. These three authors wrote this thing consecutively, each one shoving the next one deeper into the dark, and it reads like it fell out of one obsessive brain at 3am. That's not a gimmick. That's a magic trick.
THE SETUP: SPOILER FREE, I'M NOT A MONSTER
Dr. Leonore Graves is a mortician. Officially, she fixes what death leaves behind. Unofficially? She's the woman every crew in the city quietly relies on when a body needs to stop existing. Bullet wounds vanish under her stitches. Evidence disappears. Secrets get buried with the people who kept them.
Every crew relies on her. Except one. The biggest. The one even other criminals are scared of.
Enter Silas Vescari... naturally the MMC.
He doesn't ask Leonore to work for him. He informs her. And when she says no... because she is, gloriously, a woman with a mouth and a spine... he doesn't rage. He gets fascinated. He comes back. And back. And back. He calls her extraordinary. He says her talent is wasted on small men with small ambitions. He says beautiful things belong in powerful hands.
What Silas doesn't know is that Leonore has been surrounded by monsters her entire life. She has survived every single one of them. She is not a beautiful thing waiting to be owned. She's the scariest person in the room and everyone keeps underestimating it.
That gap? Between what he thinks he's hunting and what she actually is? That's the entire engine of this book.
WHY IT WORKS
I will follow a stabby FMC into any dumpster fire she chooses, and Leonore is elite. She cleans up after killers with a scalpel in one hand and an absolutely feral sense of humor in the other. She does not shrink. She does not soften herself to survive a dangerous man. She has a past she's running from and she runs on her terms.
Silas is the obsessive, city-burning MMC we all pretend we don't want dinner with. He falls first. He falls hard. And watching a man who terrifies actual crime lords get completely undone by a woman who refuses to be impressed by him is the exact brand of psychological warfare I read this genre for.
The tension is the star here... not the spice. This book wants. It leads with wanting. The pining and the power struggle do more heavy lifting than any scene could, and the book is smarter for it.
THE TWIST
There's a reveal in the back half that had reviewers all over Goodreads typing in caps. I'm not touching it. I'm just telling you it's coming, it lands, and you should stay off the spoiler threads until you've read it. Protect the jaw-drop. You've earned it.
THE TROPES

Dual first-person POV (Leonore and Silas)... so you're inside both heads while they circle each other.
MY RATING
I gave it 4-4.5 stars, not 5, and I'll tell you exactly why. The heat runs warm, not scorching... call it a solid 3 out of 5 on the spice meter. If you need the bedroom to be as unhinged as the body count, know that going in. The book chooses tension over volume, and I respect the choice. But I'm keeping it honest for the readers who show up for the fire.
And I'm not complaining on the spice. I actually have no notes or questions regarding plot holes, timelines or characters... which is sorta absurd for me. I'm just genuinely rather stingy when it comes to dishing out a solid 5-star rating.
A breakthrough find. The kind of book that ruins your weekend in the best possible way and then makes you insufferable about it to your book bestie (sorry, Jen!).
It's a complete story... no cliffhanger, no hostage situation... but it builds a world I am fully prepared to live in. Which is convenient, because the sequel, Beautiful Things Betray, drops January 2027, and I have already emotionally pre-ordered. Heck, even though I read this on my kindle... immediately afterwards, I purchased the paperback so I could have a physical copy for my trophy wall (aka. bookshelf).
